A Floricaula/Leafy gene homolog is preferentially expressed in developing female cones of the tropical pine Pinus caribaea var. caribaea Genet. Mol. Biol.
Dornelas,Marcelo Carnier; Rodriguez,Adriana Pinheiro Martinelli.
In angiosperms, flower formation is controlled by meristem identity genes, one of which, FLORICAULA (FLO)/LEAFY (LFY), plays a central role. It is not known if the formation of reproductive organs of pre-angiosperm species is similarly regulated. Here, we report the cloning of a conifer (Pinus caribaea var. caribaea) FLO/LFY homolog, named PcLFY. This gene has a large C-terminal region of high similarity to angiosperm FLO/LFY orthologs and shorter regions of local similarity. In contrast to angiosperms, conifers have two divergent genes resembling LFY. Gymnosperm FLO/LFY proteins constitute a separate clade, that can be divided into two divergent groups. Phylogenetic analysis of deduced protein sequences has shown that PcLFY belongs to the LFY-like clade....

A temperature response function for development of the chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum x morifolium Ramat.) Ciência Rural
Streck,Nereu Augusto.
Developmental models can help growers to decide management practices, and to predict flowering and harvest time. Currently, a double exponential function is proposed as a generalized temperature response function for chrysanthemum. This function is not the most appropriate because its parameters lack biological meaning. The objective of this study was to develop a nonlinear temperature response function of chrysanthemum development that has parameters with biological meaning. The proposed function is a beta function with three parameters, the cardinal temperatures (minimum, optimum, and maximum temperatures for development), which were defined as 0, 22, and 35ºC. Published data of temperature response of development of three cultivars, which are...

Analysis of morpho-agronomic and climatic variables in successive agricultural years provides novel information regarding the phenological cycle of Jatropha in conditions of the Brazilian cerrado Anais da ABC (AABC)
DOMICIANO,GISELE P.; ALVES,ALEXANDRE A.; LAVIOLA,BRUNO G.; ALBRECHT,JULIO C..
Phenological studies can provide information that enables the understanding of the dynamics of plants and how these dynamics are related to the biotic and abiotic environment. In order to study the phenological phases of Jatropha during two agricultural years, agronomic and climatic variables, such as temperature and rainfall, were evaluated. Data for each variable in each year and each genotype were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the differences were tested at 5% probability by F test. In addition, the correlation of growth behavior and reproductive development of two Jatropha accessions (CNPAE-102 and CNPAE-169) as a function of time elapsed after the start of the phenological cycle with climatic variables were analyzed through Pearson's...

Martín-Mex,Rodolfo; Vergara-Yoisura,Silvia; Nexticapán-Garcés,Ángel; Larqué-Saavedra,Alfonso.
The effect of applications of low concentrations of salicylic acid (SA) on the number of flowers and the date of flower initiation in Petunia (Petunia híbrida) in reported in this paper. Concentrations of 1 μM to lpM of SA were spread on three occasions to the shoot of plantlets cultivated in greenhouse conditions. Analysis of the results showed that all the concentrations of SA tested increased the number of open flowers per plant. Concentrations as low as lpM or 0.lnM induced positive riesponses by 33 % and 37 %, as compared with that of the control. The highest concentration of 1 μM increased not only the number of flowers by 72 % but also induced early flowering by six days.

Biology, Flowering and Fruiting of the Cactus Opuntia spp.: A Review and Some Observations on Three Varieties in Morocco BABT
Arba,Mohamed; Falisse,André; Choukr-Allah,Redouane; Sindic,Marianne.
ABSTRACT The cactus is a succulent plant resistant to droughts. According to the recently reviewed classification, cacti belong to the family of Opuntiaceae Desv. (synon. Cactaceae Juss.) with Opuntia Mill. as the typical genus. This genus is economically the most important in the family, as it includes a group of cactus pear plants which play an important role in the agricultural systems of arid and semi-arid regions. Flowering of the cactus pear fruit is an important determinant of the fruit harvesting period. The goal of this paper is to present the physiology of the cactus pear and to explain in detail the biology of its flowering and fruiting processes. This study is also enriched by our observations on the flowering and fruiting of three varieties of...

Branching, flowering and fruiting of Jatropha curcas treated with ethephon or benzyladenine and gibberellins Anais da ABC (AABC)
Costa,Anne P.; Vendrame,Wagner; Nietsche,Sílvia; Crane,Jonathan; Moore,Kimberly; Schaffer,Bruce.
Jatropha curcas L. has been identified for biofuel production but it presents limited commercial yields due to limited branching and a lack of yield uniformity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of single application of ethephon or a combination of 6-benzyladenine (BA) with gibberellic acid isomers A4 and A7 (GA4+7) on branch induction, flowering and fruit production in jatropha plants with and without leaves. Plants with and without leaves showed differences for growth and reproductive variables. For all variables except inflorescence set, there were no significant statistical interactions between the presence of leaves and plant growth regulators concentration. The total number of flowers per inflorescence was reduced as ethephon...

Decreased time from seed to flowering corm size in Zephyra elegansvia in vitro cultivation Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Vidal,Alexis K; Han,Dong-Sheng; Nakano,Masaru; Niimi,Yoshiji.
Experiments were performed to establish a method to reduce the time from seed to flowering in Zephyra elegans. Seedlings took at least four years to produce a flowering corm. Although germination was highest in a water-agar medium, plant necrosis occurred when plants were later transferred; therefore, MS (Murashige and Skoog) medium was selected as the medium for germination. An increase in the light intensity to 9500 lux and in the pH to 6.7, significantly increased the germination rate. Eight weeks after seed germination, seedlings were transferred to MS media with sucrose concentrations of 45, 60, 75, 90 or 105 g L-1 and a pH 5.7 or 6.7, with the aim of achieving the greatest corm weight gain. After 16 weeks, the best weight gain was obtained in the MS...

Differential vegetative and reproductive performances among fifteen guinea grass hybrids PAB
Usberti-Filho,José Alfredo; Usberti,Roberto; Paterniani,Ricardo Stipp.
The main scope of this work was to detect (Panicum maximum Jacq.) genotype differences as to morphoagronomic and seed quality indices, and to establish character correlations useful for determining vegetative and reproductive trends. Besides the flowering cycle, eight phenological and two seed quality traits were scored in a greenhouse randomized complete block experiment, as follows: plant height (PH), reproductive tiller number/overall tiller number (RTN/OTN), panicle number/reproductive tillers (PN/RT), leaf length (LL), leaf width (LW), panicle length (PL), fresh weight (FW), dry weight (DW), number of seeds/g (NS/G) and seed sample physical purity (SPP). Very-early and early-flowering hybrids consistently showed the highest correlation values among...

Dynamics of miR156 and miR172 involved in the flowering of Jatropha curcas L. Acta Botanica
Sánchez-Gutiérrez,Adriana; Ovando-Medina,Isidro; Adriano-Anaya,Lourdes; Vázquez-Ovando,Alfredo; Salvador-Figueroa,Miguel.
ABSTRACT Jatropha curcas is a plant that accumulates high-quality oil in its seeds, which is capable of being transformed into liquid biofuel. However, several aspects of its flowering are still unknown, which is a key step in the production of fruits, seeds, and oil. Flowering is a complex process that is regulated by various factors at the molecular level, including microRNAs (miRNAs). There is evidence suggesting that the miRNAs of the miR156 and miR172 families play a key role in the flowering transition of plants. For this reason, the dynamics of miR156 and miR172 were studied during a production cycle of J. curcas. Our results reveal that J. curcas has a mechanism for the expression of these miRNAs that differs from that reported for the vast...

Ecophysiology of the cacao tree Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Almeida,Alex-Alan F. de; Valle,Raúl R..
Cacao, one of the world's most important perennial crops, is almost exclusively explored for chocolate manufacturing. Most cacao varieties belong to three groups: Criollo, Forastero and Trinitario that vary according to morphology, genetic and geographical origins. It is cropped under the shade of forest trees or as a monocrop without shade. Seedlings initially show an orthotropic growth with leaf emission relatively independent of climate. The maturity phase begins with the emission of plagiotropic branches that form the tree crown. At this stage environmental factors exert a large influence on plant development. Growth and development of cacao are highly dependent on temperature, which mainly affects vegetative growth, flowering and fruit development....
